About me
Dick graduated from the University of Wyoming with a BS in Civil Engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Washington State. He has worked in highway safety for nearly 40 years. He began his career with the New York State DOT in 1987. Dick then worked for 15 years with the Washington State Department of Transportation. He was an Assistant State Design Engineer when he left but served as the technical expert on roadside safety for his entire career with WSDOT. He then joined FHWA as a Safety Engineer with the FHWA Resource Center’s Safety and Design Team from 2008 until 2025. In this position, Dick provided technical assistance and training on reducing severe roadway departure crashes across the country. Dick has now started a consulting business and will continue to focus on reducing roadway departures.
Dick chaired the TRB Roadside Safety Design Committee from 2009-2015 and is also a member of several NCHRP panels that oversee research on roadside safety issues. Dick has been a member of AASHTO’s Subcommittee on Design and its Technical Committee on Roadside Safety.
